Genetic testing for inherited eye disease.

چکیده
T he data, devices, and molecular techniques that have become part of the practice of medicine as a result of the Human Genome Project are for most clinicians both inspiring and intimidating. While the potential for tests that can help make very accurate diagnoses of rare genetic diseases and that can identify genetic predispositions to more common ones is exciting, the translation of this concept to practice has been slower and more complicated than most people would have imagined.

A review of retinoblastoma disease
Retinoblastoma is a rare type of eye cancer that usually occurs in early childhood, usually before the age of five. This type of cancer occurs in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue behind the eye that recognizes light and color. It is the most common type of eye cancer in children. One-third of all retinoblastomas are inherited, meaning that mutations in the RB1 gene are present in all cell...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Molecular genetics is revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment of inherited eye diseases. The National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in an effort to facilitate future basic and clinical research in inherited eye disease, created The National Ophthalmic Disease Genotyping and Phenotyping Network (eyeGENE). This review describes the process and uti...

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common form of inherited kidney disease that results in renal failure. PKD currently has no causative therapy. However, some treatment options are available, ranging from symptomatic therapy to delaying the onset of end-stage renal failure. Early diagnosis of adult polycystic kidney disease is vital in order to prevent its complic...
متن کاملI-36: Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis - Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is now considered routine in IVF laboratories with micromanipulation capability and access to genetic diagnostic services. The past two decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of PGD, the number of cycles performed, and the indications for which PGD has been used. This increase has been mirrored by a slow, but steady, increase in the range o...
